- APPLICATIONS
|
- What is the deadline for applications?
- The deadline is January 15, for enrollment in August. Review of applications will begin in early January. We do not admit students in the Spring semester.
- When can I expect to hear a decision on my application?
- Final decisions are usually not made until mid-April. You will be notified by email.
- Am I required to pay the application fee?
- The application fee is waived for US citizens and permanent residents of the US. Fee waivers usually cannot be granted to non-citizens.
|
- FINANCIAL AID
|
- Do I need to apply for financial aid?
- No. Every student admitted to the program receives a tuition waiver and a stipend. These monies will continue to be disbursed as long as the student remains in good standing in the program.
|
- COMPETITION
|
- How large is the applicant pool?
- We receive between 300 and 400 applications per year.
- How many students are admitted each year?
- There are usually no more than 12 slots available.
- Do you admit international students?
- Yes. Of the 12 slots available, generally up to 4 are offered to international students.
|
- STANDARDIZED TESTS
|
- What are the minimum accepted TOEFL scores?
- The university itself has imposed minimum TOEFL scores, to which we must adhere. Minimum TOEFL scores are 90 (iBT), 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based).
- What are the minimum accepted GRE scores?
- There is no set minimum score for the GRE. The Graduate Admissions Committee examines GRE scores on a case-by-case basis. Only the Graduate Admissions Committee can make such a determination.
- Do I need to take the subject GRE?
- The GRE subject test is not required, but would certainly work in your favor if the scores are good.
- May I personally send a copy of my TOEFL and/or GRE scores, instead of having the official scores sent by ETS?
- Photocopies of test scores are accepted ONLY for initial evaluation purposes. If the Graduate Admissions Committee wishes to make you an offer of acceptance, we must have official scores in your file before enrollment is permitted. We can accept official scores any time of the year. If the ETS-imposed time limit is about to expire, you may have official scores sent to us to be kept on file, awaiting receipt of your on-line application.

- RECOMMENDATIONS/REFERENCES
|
- Must recommendation letters be sent separately?
- Recommendation letters for U.S. applicants must be sent by the letter writers. International applicants may send recommendation letters in a single package, as long as the package is sealed and signed across the flap.
- Must transcripts be sent separately?
- U.S. applicants must have transcripts sent by their respective institutions. However, since most international universities do not mail out transcripts, international applicants may send transcripts themselves.
- You have a reference form. Does my recommender have to fill out the form or just send a letter?
- The Graduate Admissions Committee would like to receive the form. A letter is optional, but seldom do we receive the form without a letter, wherein the recommender can expand on the points made on the form.
|
- DEGREES
|
- Do you offer a Master's degree?
- We do award a Master's (M.A.) degree under unusual circumstances, but we do not encourage applicants who have no desire to pursue the Ph.D.
- Do I have to have a Master's degree already before being admitted to the Ph.D. program?
- No, a Bachelor's degree is all that is required.
|
- RESEARCH
|
- Should I contact a faculty member to determine if there is room for me in his/her lab?
- No. Application is made to the department as a whole, not to an individual faculty member.
